How to store and apply architectural coatings in the cold winter?

Currently, a large number of coating products are used in the construction field. Due to the large scale of some construction and decoration projects, cross-season situations may occur. So, what should we pay attention to when storing and applying paint products purchased in summer in winter? Today, Popar Chemical brings you relevant knowledge and guidance.

What impact will low temperatures in winter have on architectural coatings products?

The low temperatures in winter will have a certain impact on coating products. Here are some possible impacts:

Paint Setting or Drying Time Extended: Low temperatures can slow down the paint’s setting process, resulting in longer drying times. This can make construction difficult, especially when working outdoors. Prolonged drying times may increase the risk of contamination and damage to the coating.

Decrease in the quality of the coating film: At low temperatures, the viscosity of the coating may increase, making it difficult to apply the coating evenly during the construction process, and prone to uneven coating thickness and rough surfaces. This may affect the quality and appearance of the coating.

Decreased freeze-thaw resistance: Low temperature will increase the brittleness of the coating and weaken its freeze-thaw resistance. If the coating product has insufficient freeze-thaw resistance, freezing and thawing cycles may cause the coating to crack, peel, or blister.

Restrictions on construction conditions: Low temperature may cause restrictions on construction conditions, such as the inability to construct below a certain temperature. This may delay the schedule or limit the scope of construction.

Since the low temperatures in winter have such a big impact on architectural coatings, we should pay attention to taking measures in advance to minimize the negative impact. So, we should first predict the coming of winter.

How to predict whether winter is coming?

To predict the arrival of cold winter in advance, you can take the following methods:

1. Pay attention to the weather forecast: Pay close attention to the weather forecast, especially the temperature and precipitation. If the forecast shows a significant drop in temperatures, a prolonged period, or widespread snowfall, then winter may be just around the corner.

2. Observe natural signals: There are often signals in nature that can herald the arrival of cold winter, such as changes in animal behavior. Some animals prepare to hibernate or store food in advance, which may mean the coming of cold winter. In addition, some plants will go dormant or degenerate in advance before the cold season.

3. Analyze historical data: By analyzing historical climate data, you can understand common patterns and trends in cold winters. For example, checking the temperature and precipitation conditions during the same time period in the past few years can help predict whether the future winter will be severe.

5. Study climate indicators: Some climate indicators can help predict the arrival of cold winter, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), El Niño, etc. Understanding the historical changes in these indicators and their impact on cold winters can provide clues for predicting cold winters.

It should be noted that there is a certain degree of uncertainty in both weather forecasts and climate change forecasts. Therefore, the above method can only be used as a reference and cannot completely accurately predict the arrival of cold winter. Timely attention to forecasts and corresponding preparations are more important measures.

After predicting the coming of cold winter, we can take corresponding prevention and intervention measures.

How to transport and store architectural coating products during the cold winter?

1. Latex paint

Generally, the transportation and storage temperature of latex paint cannot be lower than 0℃, especially not lower than -10℃. In cold zone areas, there is heating in winter, and the indoor temperature can generally meet the requirements, but special attention must be paid to the transportation process and anti-freezing work before heating.

In humid temperate areas where there is no heating in winter, special attention should be paid to changes in indoor storage temperature and antifreeze work should be done. It is best to add some heating equipment such as electric heaters.

2. White latex

When the temperature drops below 0°C, insulation measures must be taken on the transport vehicles when transporting white latex. Straw mats or warm quilts can be spread around the cabin and on the floor to ensure that the temperature inside the cabin is above 0°C. Or use a dedicated heated vehicle for transportation. The heated vehicle has a heating function. The heater can be turned on to heat the compartment during transportation to ensure that the white latex is not frozen during transportation.

The indoor temperature of the warehouse should also be kept above 5°C to avoid ventilation and temperature loss.

3. Imitation stone paint

When the outdoor temperature is too low, imitation stone paint should be stored indoors to ensure that the indoor temperature is above 0°C. When the temperature is below 0°C, heating or electric heating must be used to raise the indoor temperature. Products that have been frozen cannot be used again.

What precautions should be taken when constructing architectural coatings during the cold winter?

1. Latex paint

During construction, the wall temperature shall not be lower than 5°C, the ambient temperature shall not be lower than 8°C, and the air humidity shall not be higher than 85%.

·Avoid construction in windy weather. Because winter is relatively dry, windy weather can easily cause cracks on the surface of the paint film.

·Generally, the maintenance time of latex paint is 7 days (25℃), and it should be extended appropriately when the temperature is low and the humidity is high. Therefore, it is not recommended to carry out construction if the ambient temperature is lower than 8℃ or the humidity is higher than 85% for several consecutive days.

2. White latex

·It is not suitable for construction when the air humidity is greater than 90% and the temperature is below 5℃.

·If you find that the white latex is frozen during use, do not stir it, slowly heat it to defrost it in an environment of 20 to 35°C, and stir it evenly after thawing. If it is in good condition, you can use it normally. Do not thaw white latex repeatedly, otherwise it will reduce the bonding strength of the glue.

3. Imitation stone paint

Construction is not suitable when the temperature is lower than 5℃ and the wind force is greater than Level 4. Rain and snow should be avoided within 24 hours of spraying the main coating. During construction, the base layer is required to be smooth, solid, and free of cracks.

·During construction, appropriate protective measures should be taken according to the construction conditions of the construction site to avoid freezing of the coating film to ensure construction quality.

Therefore, only by achieving prediction, prevention and careful control can we ensure the quality of construction and avoid the waste of building coating products during cross-season operations in building construction projects.
